Our roots in Alexandria date back to 1949, when the first Potomac River Station generating unit came online to help support rapid post-war growth of the D.C. area. The plant preceded much of Alexandrias modern development, existing in relative isolation on a 28-acre rural site.
Five decades later, the greater City of Alexandria area is ten times more populous, and the community has literally grown up around us. All indicators including Alexandrias recent listing as one of Inc. magazines Hot Cities point to continued growth for the region. Ensuring a reliable power stream with minimal impact on the surrounding environment is a challenge Potomac River employees take seriously.
We have a stake in Alexandrias future.
For the folks who operate the Potomac River Generating Station, this region is home. Many of us have worked at the plant for 20 years or more. We have a vested interest in making the community the best it can be.
Employees at the Potomac River Generating Station are cross-trained, providing greater efficiency and accountability. Plant technicians Tyrone Diggs, Sheila Porter and David Gross are skilled in both operations and maintenance.
Through nearly six years of Mirant operation and under previous owners, this plant has a long history of contributing to the community beyond power generation. We provide steady employment with competitive pay and benefits. We pay property taxes that support schools and infrastructure. We donate our time and money to a variety of local causes. We contract with local vendors for the services we need to maintain safe, efficient operations.
We provide energy to communities, and reliability to the power grid.
