For many years, Potomac River Generating Station employees have volunteered at community events, and the plant has worked to strengthen the local economy and the community’s well-being through financial contributions to local organizations and key partnerships with various groups and individuals.

Rick Fearing, reliability and procedures analyst at the Potomac River Generating Station, participated in the Capital River Relief Project with his co-workers.

Below you'll find a summary of our efforts and achievements. As new activities and events arise, we'll post them to this page so you can join us; together we can generate positive change for Alexandria and the surrounding region.

Recent Efforts and Achievements

  • Mirant Mid-Atlantic is a proud member of the 2007 Clean Air Partners. Through a joint grant awarded by Mirant and the Virginia Department of Environmental Quality, the Environmental Education Exchange is developing an air quality curriculum for schools throughout the region. This ground breaking environmental education program is being rolled out at North Chevy Chase Elementary School, Poe Middle School, Francis C. Hammond Middle School, Anne Arundel County Public Schools, Lafayette Elementary School, Benjamin Banneker Middle School, and the William S. Schmidt Outdoor Education Center.
  • On March 31, 2007, our employees participated in the Alice Ferguson Foundation's Annual Potomac River Watershed Cleanup, clearing the river of over 66 bags of trash, four tires and other various items.
  • In partnership with the National Park Service and local community groups, the station hosts clean up events twice a year along the Potomac River. Each year our employees have hauled away several hundred pounds of debris from the river and shoreline. Much of this debris consists of damaged piers, old appliances and street signs.
  • On April 25th, 2006 our employees participated in the Capital River Relief event, collecting approximately 20 tires, 60 bags of trash and other items from the Potomac River.
  • Our facility is certified by the Wildlife Habitat Council (WHC) and is listed in the Registry of Certified and Internationally Accredited Wildlife Habitat Programs. These certifications are voluntary programs that help corporate, federal and private landowners utilize their property for the benefit of wildlife. Read more about our wildlife habitat efforts»
  • Mirant is providing a $250,000 grant to the Washington Metropolitan Scholars (WMS) program to enhance college access opportunities for talented African American high school seniors who live in Alexandria, Virginia. The first 10 students to receive the Mirant/Alexandria Scholarships have been accepted at colleges such as Yale University, the University of Pennsylvania, Oberlin College, the University of Virginia, New York University, the University of Richmond, and other select institutions.
  • We are corporate sponsors of the annual Alexandria Earth Day Fair, the City of Alexandria’s Valor Awards and the Red Cross Alexandria Chapter Waterfront Festival. We also sponsor a number of educational events held by the Alexandria Education Partnership.
  • Mirant is active in the Oyster Recovery Partnership, providing the stainless steel cages needed to produce seed oysters (spat) and transport them to planting areas. Employees have planted more than 11 million spat in the Patuxent and Potomac Rivers in Southern Maryland near our Chalk Point and Morgantown generating stations.
  • In 2001, the Potomac River station spent $300,000 in fencing, landscaping, and plantings under a beautification project requested by the City of Alexandria. In addition, we donated $50,000 to the City to upgrade the railroad crossing at N. Washington Street and Slaters Lane.
  • Mirant was nominated for Alexandria’s 2002 Business Philanthropy Award.
