System Performance Test – Dye in Potomac River

Today, beginning at approximately 11:30 a.m., Mirant’s Potomac River station will be placing a red, blue, and green colored dye into our various drains on the property which ultimately discharge to the Potomac River at our authorized discharge point. Through the use of the dyes, Mirant will be able to clearly identify where each drainage line flows and identify that line’s ultimate authorized discharge point. Since the plant became operational in 1949, several modifications have occurred over the years including the sealing off of various drain lines. With this test, Mirant Potomac River will have a clear roadmap of its system and also be able to take proactive measures to reduce the potential of any leaks or spills.

Again, this is just a system performance test. But as a neighbor to the plant and a user of the Mount Vernon Trail, we want to notify you of this activity as the dye may be visible as it discharges into a pan. Mirant will be utilizing a vacuum truck to collect the discharge before it would otherwise flow to the Potomac River; however, it is possible some dye may be visible in the river. This exercise will take place today and tomorrow, Friday, March 12, 2010.
