Mirants four power plants in Maryland and Virginia produce more than 5,000 megawatts of generating capacity for the Washington, D.C. region. Mirant and the Department of Justice, the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), the Commonwealth of Virginia and the State of Maryland reached an agreement, called the Amended Consent Decree, which caps and reduces NOx emissions from four Mid-Atlantic plants. Mirant agreed to these reductions two years ago; however, this has only recently been announced. This Amended Consent Decree provides Mirant with the flexibility to decide how best to comply fully with the agreed-upon declining NOx emissions limits on a system-wide basis. Over the past three years, we have reduced our NOx emissions by 30 percent on both a rate basis and tonnage basis. In addition to the low NOx burners and the separated over-fire air (SOFA) system already installed at the Potomac River Generating Station, Mirant will install two Selective Catalytic Reduction systems (SCRs) or an equivalent NOx technology for Units 1 and 2 at the Morgantown Generating Station. Positioning this equipment at Morgantown will provide maximum benefit for the entire D.C. metropolitan area. The Morgantown SCRs are scheduled to be brought into service in May 2007 for Unit 1 and May 2008 for Unit 2. In addition, Mirant is currently installing a selective auto-catalytic reduction system at the Chalk Point Generating Station. |
