Environmental stewardship is about meeting today’s energy needs without compromising the quality of life of future generations. In addition to providing balanced and reasonable environmental solutions for power generation, we have a long history of participation and leadership in activities to help restore, nurture and protect various aspects of our environment — from water to wildlife.

Mark Nitz, group leader of engineering, oversaw the installation of the Geiger MultiDisc water intake screens. The MultiDisc fish protection technology, pictured, gently returns fish to the river.

Many of our efforts are carried out in close cooperation with local, state and federal agencies, including the Virginia Department of Environmental Quality, Maryland Department of Environment, Maryland Department of Natural Resources, the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service, the National Park Service, and non-governmental organizations such as the Capital River Relief Project, the Center for Watershed Protection and the Alice Ferguson Foundation.

As an example, in 2005, Mirant installed Geiger MultiDisc water intake screens at the Potomac River Generating Station to reduce debris brought into the plant. Mirant partnered with the Electric Power Research Institute (EPRI) to study the use of the MultiDisc fish protection technology to comply with new Clean Water Act regulations. This technology gently returns fish to the river and is the first MultiDisc fish protection system installation in the United States.
