Mirant Corporation

In pursuing its mission to protect human health and the environment, the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) develops and enforces regulations to implement environmental laws enacted by Congress. The EPA sets national environmental standards, and delegates to states the responsibility for issuing permits and for monitoring and enforcing compliance.

Mirant takes its environmental obligations seriously. Guided by our Environmental Policy, our plants continually strive to fully comply with the stringent standards set by the EPA.

We send the EPA:

  • Monthly water discharge monitoring reports; also reported to the D.C. Department of Health;
  • Quarterly Electronic Data Reports (EDRs) showing hourly emissions of NOx, SO2, CO2, and Heat Input; this data is also reported to the Virginia Department of Environmental Quality (DEQ);
  • Annual certification verifying the amount of SO2 emitted from the station;
  • Annual certification verifying the amount of NOx emitted during the summer ozone season (May-September);
  • Annual Toxic Release Inventory (TRI) summary; and
  • Biennial Hazardous Waste Reports; also reported to the Virginia Department of Environmental Quality and the Alexandria Local Emergency Planning Committee.
