Community Question

Is it true that because some power plants are “grandfathered” into compliance, that they are exempt from regulation?

No. Federal and state regulators require every power generating facility to go through a permitting process, regardless of age. The resulting operating permits spell out clear emissions limits to minimize land, water and air impacts.

Ours is an enormously complex business. Though we operate in the competitive energy industry — sometimes erroneously described as “unregulated” — most aspects of power generation continue to be highly regulated. Our plant has national and regional, not just local, importance, and government agencies at all levels oversee various aspects of our operations.

These agencies all play a role — some larger than others — in ensuring the Potomac River Generating Station operates:

  • Reliably — providing critical electricity to the greater Washington, D.C. region;
  • Legally — complying with all operating permits; and
  • Safely — protecting the well-being of citizens and our employees.

We aim to work in a spirit of cooperation with all governmental agencies. We cultivate an open and transparent relationship by providing information and access to our facility.
