The North American Electric Reliability Corporation (NERC) serves as the Electric Reliability Organization (ERO) for the United States.

Under the Energy Policy Act of 2005, the ERO has the legal authority to develop and enforce reliability standards on all owners, operators, and users of the bulk power system. This is a significant change from recent history when compliance with reliability standards developed by NERC was voluntary.
